I got introduced to Carmel Berkson at a hotel at Aurangabad where we were staying while visiting Ellora caves. I was impressed with her knowledge of Indian mythology and culture and that she had written several books on related subjects. Carmel has traveled extensively in India and photographed subjects of her interest - temples and sculptures found in temples as well as various caves. Subsequently Carmel created a large body of sculptures, several of which were acquired by collectors.
Carmel's sculptures are now part of the permanent collection of National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) who arranged two grand exhibitions at Delhi and Mumbai. Carmel was honoured with Padma Shri by Government of India in 2010 for her outstanding contribution to Indian art and culture.
Carmel shuttled between India and New York for several years before returning back. Hope she would still make few trips here. I will surely miss my regular chat with Carmel over lunch at Radio Club, Mumbai.
