A rare self portrait of Amrita Sher-Gil sourced from private collection (not the one featured above) fetched highest price ever for an Indian woman painter. This oil on canvas painting which was painted in 1933 was sold at USD 2.92 million at Sotheby's New York auction on 18th March 2015. This was much higher than the estimates which ranged between USD 1.2 to 1.8 million.
I am a big fan of Amrita Sher-Gil's work and try to visit the fantastic collection of her paintings housed at NGMA (National Gallery of Modern Art) gallery at New Delhi whenever I visit Delhi.
Fortunately her artworks were declared as a national treasure in 1976 and export of these work has been banned. This has ensured that this priceless collection is very much here in India and generations of art lovers, artists and students will get to see the work of one of the most influential artists from India.
