Aoshima, Miyazaki

Aoshima Island (青島, Aoshima) is a small, beautiful island, which is off the coast of Miyazaki City in south east Japan. The island is connected to the mainland by a bridge. The island has a subtropical jungle at its centre and is surrounded by white beaches.

Aoshima Jinja, a serene and colourful shrine, is at the centre of this island. This shrine is said to bring luck to married couples. To the right of the main shrine, is a path through the jungle to a smaller shrine. There is a ritual followed at the small shrine, where visitors throw clay disks at a target for luck.

The shallow water at Aoshima island is also known for a geological phenomenon known as Oni no Sentakuita, or devil's washboard. These are straight rows of basalt rocks which are visible at low tide. These are natural formations, although they appear to be manmade, due to the straight line formations that they are seen in. Similar rock formations are also found farther south along the Nichinan Coast as well. (Miyazaki, 2018)
