Pompeii

Pompeii

It was in 1990 that we visited Pompeii while traveling in Italy. We could see the Vesuvius mountain from a distance which witnessed a massive volcanic eruption that destroyed the city of Pompeii. The volcanic eruption was sudden and ferocious and gave very little opportunity for people to escape. The remains have been well preserved and offer a good insight into the civilisation of Pompeii. Several people were charred to death which came unannounced and it was a chilling experience to see human and animal bodies locked into the posture of their action at this sudden death.

Never imagined that much later - in 2011, we would witness a wonderful exhibition titled "A Day in Pompeii" at Museum of Science, Boston. It was quite an exhaustive exhibition with a large number of exhibits drawn from the excavations at Pompeii with a neatly produced presentation which recreated the city, its civilisation and the tragic end due to sudden volcanic eruption of Vesuvius.
